The new RF-Mount RF85mm F1.4 L VCM Hybrid lens, like the other lenses in the series, is designed for multi-media shooters who need to capture stills or video.

Key features

  • Full-Frame Format | f/1.4 to f/16
  • Extremely Fast Design, Advanced Optics
  • Voice Coil Motor (VCM) for Rear Focus
  • Nano USM for Fast Floating Autofocus
  • Manual Iris/Full-Time Focus Rings
  • Air Sphere (ASC) Coating
  • One Aspherical Elements, Two UD Elements
  • Rounded 11-Blade Diaphragm
  • Weather-Sealed Design
  • Attachable Rear Gel Filter Holder

Canon claims that the 85mm provides beautiful background blurring, as well as an F1.4 Maximum aperture, and well-controlled focus breathing.

Back in June 2024, Canon announced the RF 35mm f/1.4L VCM, which was a first-of-its-kind hybrid lens designed to capture both stills and video. Then, later in 2024, they announced the 24 and 50mm focal lengths. In March this year, they announced the 20mm.

These VCM lenses enable Canon users to have a small, compact set of primes that can be used with cameras such as the C50, C80, R5C, R5 Mark II, C400, etc.

The RF F1.4L VCM lenses are the only RF prime lenses with a dedicated iris control ring for video. They also feature an 11-blade aperture and minimal focus breathing. They also include the option for both front and rear filters.

All the lenses in the series are the same physical size, but the weight does vary slightly. The 50mm weighs 610g, while the 24mm weighs 550g. The 35mm weighs 555g, and the 20mm weighs 519g.

The lenses features the fast Nano USM, combined with even faster Voice Coil Motor (VCM) technology. There is also a dedicated Lens Control Ring and a customizable Lens Function Button.

A fluorine coating repels dirt and sand from sticking to the front, and the light design (lighter than the EF predecessor) makes for comfortable shooting for long periods in the field. In addition, Canon claims that thanks to aspheric and UD lens elements, with Super Spectra and ASC coatings, users can enjoy clear images without the worry of flare and ghosting.
